From a small town in France to wild dreaming
Rene Descartes was born in 1569 in a small town called La Haye in the north of France. At age 10, he went to a boarding school called La Fleche where he studied classical literature, history and rhetoric.[1] He later on attended in 1615, the University of Poitiers where he studied, Mathematics, moral philosophy and physical science where he received his Baccalaureate and License in Canon & Civil Law.[2] He was then recruited in the army, and in his spare time he traveled around Europe where he was dedicated to mathematics. Throughout this time, he experienced a sequence of powerful dreams which influenced him greatly, which informed him that all sciences are one. In 1629, he moved to Holland where he was committed to writing and studying.[3]
Rene Descartes has left a vast number very important writings regarding the topics of philosophy and mathematics. One of the most powerful and influential philosophical books ever written to this day was written by Descartes. Meditations on First Philosophy was his most important and significant pieces of writing and remains one of the fundamental books of philosophy and is still studied to this day.[4] The book describes methods that can be used to examine philosophical questions involving “scepticism, existence of soul, nature of God, truth, human knowledge of the external world and the relation between the body and mind.”[5] Descartes spent most of his later years defending his position. He wrote many other famous powerful books; Principles of Philosophy, The world, The Passion of the Soul, The Geometry of Rene Descartes… The image below , is a letter from Rene Descartes stolen over 150 year ago.
